Top Techie Networking Events in NYC

If you're making a career change, trying to get your foot in the door to a new industry, or developing your network in the startup community, you need to be out and about, pounding the pavement. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, 70% of new career opportunities are found through networking, and the crowded NYC job market is far from an exception to this rule. New York's innovation ecosystem has plenty of meetups, skill-shares, hackathons to keep you learning and growing. The trouble can be cutting through the noise. We asked some of the experts in our network to share their favorite New York City networking events and industry meetups. Here are their top picks:[bctt tweet="Top NYC #tech events, ft @jkreim @jcness @amelielamont @milesbackward @NickPersicio @nsamuell"]

Events for web developers:

HackerNest NYC is my personal favorite, but I'm super biased since I'm the organizer. But I'd definitely encourage developers to check out the meetup scene and make friends and conversation with other people in the tech community. Not only because being a good communicator is a key skill for a developer, but also because software engineering can get super lonely if you don't put yourself out there every once in a while!

Neville Samuell, Lead Engineer at Pathgather and Startup Institute instructor

Events for web designers:

ANY meetup for design is a great opportunity to meet new people. Honestly, you never know who you could run into–everyone is a potential connection, and most importantly, a potential awesome friend.

Amélie Lamont , Design and UX at VenueBook and Startup Institute instructor

EmpireJS is a fabulous conference just about JavaScript. Plus, last time it was held at the Museum of the American Indian, across the street from Startup Institute New York!

Roger Sperberg, JavaScript Developer at Apperson Labs and Startup Institute alumnus

Events for salespeople:

The Enterprise Sales Meetup is a great monthly meetup hosted by some of the thought leaders in NYC tech sales.

Nick Persico, Co-Founder at SmartHost and Startup Institute instructor

The Sales Hacker conference is good. Most sales-oriented meetups are just salespeople trying to sell other sales people. This one is about improving yourself as a salesperson.

Selim Nehdi, Partnerships Manager at MassChallenge and Startup Institute alumnus

Events for digital marketers:

My favorite marketing meetup in the city is StrategyChat, of course! But I'm biased. My second favorite marketing meetup is the Empire Startups Marketing Meetup. They have excellent panels of experts who speak on a variety of topics that are relevant to grassroots marketing. For a good time, though, the NYC Marketing Mixer can't be beat.

Joshua Ness, Co-Founder at StrategyHack and Startup Institute instructor

Events for all brands of innovation enthusiasts:

  • Tech in Motion: New York City: Meet and collaborate with others in the tech community, get your questions answered in real-time, discover new tech, and hear stories that inspire.
  • Startup Grind: Events featuring successful local founders, innovators, educators and investors who share lessons learned on the road to building great companies.
  • Out in Tech:

It's a great group of LGBT folks from a pretty wide swath of tech, from large media companies to FinTech to small bootstrapped companies. Worth checking out!

Jacob Kreimer, Account Director at Twitter and Startup Institute alumnus
