We are happy to announce that tomorrow, in celebration of National Mentor Month we’ll be teaming up with our friends at Uber to bring UberMENTOR to the residents of Chicago. No one does stunt marketing quite like Uber, and we’re honored to power an initiative that aligns so well with our own mission. Ranked #2 for cities with the fastest-growing private companies on Inc. 5000 for the second year in row, Chicago’s growth as an innovation hub will depend on our ability to transform our talent pool. In a recent report from investment firm CBRE, Chicago ranked the 5th largest and 11th fastest-growing tech market in the country. And, in the past four years, the capital city has created more than 40,000 tech jobs.[bctt tweet="Chicago's growth as a tech hub depends on transforming our talent pool, says @eatonbrook #uberMENTOR #steeryourcareer" via="no"]
The city’s tech talent growth rate has overtaken Silicon Valley’s by nearly five percent. Funding raised by startups in Chicago doubled in 2014, with nearly$1.6 billion in venture capital invested. The growth in venture funding continued in 2015, at $1.7 billion invested. This influx of cash means there are more opportunities than ever for those wanting to advance their careers.
For aspiring innovators who want to make an impact, there is no shortage of industries. Chicago has six diverse sectors, with talent and investments spread broadly across marketing and advertising, healthcare, fintech, edtech, e-commerce, and human resources. Tech giants including Google and Facebook also have offices in Chicago, with Google recently moving 500+ employees to the West Loop.
Many former leaders of tech companies like GrubHub, Avant, and Groupon have now begun to work in newer, early-stage companies—which means they are being run by experienced founders who know how to scale. Chicago is quickly becoming the tech center of the Midwest.
We know from our experience helping students make career transitions into the tech sector, that mentorship and connection to community is a huge part of what will make an individual successful. Chicago has the talent and leadership to build a world-class, 21st century workforce that’s at the forefront of tech development, and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of that process.[bctt tweet="Mentorship + network are a key drivers of career success, says @eatonbrook #uberMENTOR #steeryourcareer" via="no"]
