Workshop

Boston: Community Class - Inspiring Careers in Design

6:00PM | Tuesday, May 16

Startup Institute: 50 Milk Street 20th Floor, CIC (Lighthouse East), Boston, MA 02109

When most people hear the word “designer” they think of an artist. Perhaps a fashion designer showcasing their work in a magazine or on a catwalk, an interior designer bringing a room together in beautiful harmony, or maybe a graphic designer manipulating digital design elements. The truth is that design isn’t all about what meets the eye. If you’re a highly empathetic person with a penchant for understanding people’s needs, you could thrive in a design career without ever going to art school. Through a series of individual and group exercises and a short panel discussion, we’ll break down what a career in design could be. HIGHLIGHTS In this three-hour, hands-on workshop, we’ll help you uncover how design is interwoven into our lives and careers. You’ll leave the evening with: A greater understanding of the diversity of design A personal exploration of how design is incorporated into your life and career Networking with professionals from a range of design careers in multiple industries Knowledge and resources to help shape a design career that fits your goals and lifestyle Your insights will shape the Design Museum’s upcoming Inspiring Careers program ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY CLASSES Startup Institute Community Classes aim to extend tech education and career training to the greater community of Boston, at the same time supporting mission-driven nonprofits in our city. Proceeds from these events go to programming and scholarships that support inclusion in the tech sector. This month's featured nonprofit is Design Museum Foundation - Boston, an organization that believes design can change the world as well as elevate our quality of life, make businesses more competitive, and protect our environment. Now, more than ever, design awareness, education, and expertise are instrumental in impacting our communities, organizations, and markets around the world. Design Museum Foundation is redefining what it means to be a museum in the 21st century — they are online, nomadic, and accessible to all through a collection of exhibitions, events, and content. Interested in this org? You can get involved here. COST Your $5 admission fee will be donated to Design Museum Foundation and used to further design education and programming in our city. Want to give more? Sign up to be a Design Museum member. YOUR INSTRUCTOR Renee Farster-Degenhardt.
