What draws me to full-stack development is the ability to build full-fledged products that make a positive difference in people's lives. There is a combination of creativity and problem solving that it demands. They are two challenges that have remarkably different aspects in approach, and when they come together, become a grand challenge worth pursuing. Creativity is used when brainstorming what can be made or done better. Problem solving is how that can be implemented. Putting the two together leads to innovation. I absolutely love to embrace this challenge of multi-dimensional work and am driven to excel.

What was your background prior to web development?

In my undergraduate program, I gained a business degree with double concentrations in Finance and Accounting. I did well, earned high grades, got involved in a multitude of extracurricular activities, and ended up with a job offer at a Big 4 public accounting firm. It was stable, somewhat prestigious, but it gnawed at me every day how much more I wanted to do than just look at numbers of the past. I wanted to build, be inspired and create, products that have real, positive impacts. And two little voices began to chatter inside my head. Don't be stupid, this is job security, one said, but the second grew louder with time until it became clear to me that I did not want to go through a decade only to look back and regret never taking that chance. It's risky and scary, but the fear drives me. Ultimately I want to put all my skills together, from a strong background in finance and business to technical skills, at an early-stage company where I am challenged to wear many hats.

What can you do so far with your technical expertise?

I have been reading, watching, and building as much as I can, diving into Ruby with Rails and Javascript/JQuery/Coffeescript with front-end frameworks like Ember.js and Backbone.js, along with some high-level, language-agnostic CS concepts. Prior to starting this program, I built a web app that automates fitness log keeping and analysis of statistical data for training planning and improvement (going for a whole dashboard), with a planned social factor to compare your progress with your friends. Since then, I have built an online platform that went to the final round of selection for MassChallenge and also attended hackathons where I helped make an Instagram curator for fashion blogs. All can be found on my Github!

What else do you like to do for fun?

I'm starting to appreciate traveling and that's something that I want to do a lot more of in the coming years, with my friends and family. I'm also trying to cook better because I realize how much nutrition you can pack in each meal when making it yourself, and the hurdle is making it actually tasty. And I think that fascination comes from my interest in fitness, where besides training techniques and proper programming, diet is so important. I believe fitness has taught me a lot of important lessons, the main one being that consistency adds up. I took the same approach with programming, doing a little each day, and while not necessarily seeing noteworthy progress at first, it's amazing when things start to click. I still have a long way to go but I enjoy hacking away. Lastly, I also like to follow the financial markets and companies that are doing interesting things.
