Guess who got the job?
And they're letting me start after my trip! I'm going to sign today. They don't mention health insurance in the offer but the offer is really good, and that's a given, right? Right???
I'd like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all three of you for the incredible amount of support and guidance you've given me over the last couple months. I was so unhappy with my career just a matter of weeks ago, and now I feel like everything is coming together. I would never have been brave enough to take this step without Startup Institute, and I'll always be an advocate for the program.
Stephanie, can we still meet tomorrow so I can make sure I'm communicating this acceptance to other companies correctly?
Much love to you guys,
Startup Institute has made me extremely excited for what’s next. Before Startup Institute, I dreaded having to decide what my next career move would be. "Next" was just a way to escape what made me unhappy before, and landed me in roles that I still did not enjoy. My Startup Institute cohort was filled with many passionate, ambitious, and extraordinary people and I cannot wait to see what amazing things are to come for each of them. Startup Institute was worth all the stress, the lack of sleep, the tears, and the fear of what’s next, because we were all in it together. And even though the summer is over, in reality, it’s just the beginning of our journey.
Just had my first performance review at Winterline and it went really really well.
Wanted to say thank you for all you and the team have done to get me to where I am today. I love my job and I'm totally crushing it.
I went through the Startup Institute in the Spring class of 2015—I was transitioning out of the military and into my first civilian career. I wanted to send a personal thank-you note for everything that Startup Institute has helped me do, as well as for the time and advice that you gave me personally.
The first company I ended up at after Startup Institute fell short of my expectations. I'll never forget how you and Allan shared advice with me at 10:00pm after I sent Allan a stressed-out email following a terrible day at work. The fact that you were both so willing to set aside time to write thoughtful emails to me at 10:30pm on a Thursday night five months after I completed Startup Institute is a testament to the quality and dedication of the SI staff. And it ended up leading me to my current job, which I absolutely love!
Thank you for everything, and for helping to make Startup Institute such a great organization.
Some good news, I was offered the position of Applications Programmer Analyst I from Trinity Health and I have decided to accept the position. Trinity Health is not a Startup but it is a non profit organization so I will be working for a cause and also this will give me a great learning experience both in programming and testing.
Got a call from Boston alum Brian D. and I gave him as much advice as I could on how to find a job in Metro Detroit area, I will keep in touch with him.
Joining Startup Institute was the best decision of my life!
As I get settled in my new career I wanted to express my sincerest gratitude to you all.
Thank you so much for your patience, for listening to my problems and for your honest feedback. Without your help none of this would have been possible.
I am so glad to be part of this network of friends from Startup Institute!
Thank you again for everything.
I hope your new year is off to a good start. As I am mid-way into my 2nd week here at Flywire, I just wanted to once again thank you all for everything.
Back in July when I left my last company, I could have never predicted or even hoped to be where I am today, and I know I couldn't have done it by myself. I just feel like I am in the place I am supposed to be in terms of culture, role and overall company.
Anyway, I just wanted to once again thank you all (and everyone else) for what you do, as it is pretty magical, and to remind you that if there is ever anything I can do to help Startup Institute, I am in!
I just wanted to write you a quick note to let you know that I started a new job yesterday as an IT security specialist. When I interviewed for the position, I told them that I had completed the web development program at Startup Institute, and that I had limited knowledge of security but I was willing to learn. They believed in me enough to offer to pay for the certification, while I'm working. It's a great deal, and the pay is twice what I was making the last time we spoke. Thanks for the motivation!!
An open letter to my cohort—
Nine weeks of the craziest and most incredible experience that is Startup Institute is two days from ending, and I couldn't have asked for a better cohort that's made me truly value the importance of diversity of thought and backgrounds. Not one of us is at all like the other, and it makes for the best potluck of personalities that brings so much unique good to the table. You've quit cushy jobs, flown halfway around the world from Brazil, dedicated months to a path with an ending that had zero guaranteed outcome. That's BRAVE AS HELL. We've all seen each other at times struggle to define our goals and dreams, but have also seen each other grow in ways we couldn't imagine. I, for one, have probably cried enough to fix CA's water shortage, but I digress. I've seen people finally embody their incredible full potential and find that treasure trove of what it is that makes them tick, and that's rare to find in a lifetime, never mind a few months. You carry yourself with an amplified assurance of your path in life, and color me impressed. You guys are awesome. To that idea of being afraid to test yourself, and risking it all to find that outlet for your life's passions: BYE, FELICIA, BAIIIIIII.
First of all, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to join Startup Institute back in October and, most importantly, for having founded this amazing program
Secondly, below you’ll see a very kind email from Rob Connors who has been more than nice to help me out without me even asking for it!
Which gets to me what I had in mind to say - thank you for this! I would have never in a million years expected or hoped to be welcomed in this community and have so many people trying to help me out, especially given my particularly difficult situation. Whether this works out for me eventually or not, I’ll forever be grateful for all the nice people I have met and for being, for the first time ever, in the situation where I am not applying for jobs and never hearing back, but actually getting a chance to talk to the companies.
Thank you so much once again,
Hi Shaun, John and Frances,
Happy New Year, I hope you had a great holiday!
I wanted to thank you for everything you all have done for us this past semester, we weren't always an easy bunch (speaking only for the design team lol).
It was really tough, but you were all right - my life has totally changed and my career prospects have dramatically improved. I learned what I needed to learn. I really feel so lucky to have been accepted into the program and have made real friends that I hope to keep seeing for years to come.
So, if there is ever any design help any of you need please feel free to let me know, I'd love to help out where I can!
All the Best,
To you wonderful, amazing people on this week of thanks -
As I reflect on this last year, I am astounded at where I was in January and where I am now. Both personally and professionally, although that differentiation is quite grey as you know so well.
I didn't leave my job because I was unhappy. I left because it was time. Time for a new challenge, a new adventure. I may be someone who leaps, but I freak out a ton when standing on that precipice overlooking the unknown. You know that. But I always take the leap. And you were/are my cheerleaders and my parachute.
Creating a safe and enriching environment that simultaneously breaks open and builds people is an educational unicorn. SI is that unicorn. I always default to doing it all on my own and resist any help. I saw asking for help as a weakness. You changed that. I am a better and stronger person because of the community of SI.
I love what I'm doing now and I know that each of you and the Startup Institute community is in my corner.
I got accepted to Intrepid's Apprentice Program!!!!
I am VERY EXCITED!!
The program starts January 4 and it lasts three months. After that, they decide if I qualify for a full time position.
Thank you for all the advice! I want you to know that because of Startup Institute I was able to identify what I was passionate about, what kind of company I was looking for, what kind of people I wanted to work for and with, and what I really wanted to do with my life and that is priceless!
Thank you Shaun, I will keep you updated and if you ever need anything do not hesitate!
Glad to hear from you, and hope this message will find you well.
Thanks for being in touch. RampUp has been—in one word—simply, awesome.
I’ve been learning an incredible amount of information in such a short timeframe, which is not only fantastic, but also totally in tune with my core Capitalist value: Time is Money.
Sam is not only an incredibly talented programmer, but a great educator. His didactical approach—theory followed by practice—is out-of-this-world. It’s been extremely exciting to see the class content immediately applied into coding exercises that accurately simulate problem solving challenges web developers currently deal with in the tech Industry.
At this point of the cohort, I can tell that I couldn’t have made a better choice then joining the Startup Institute when I enrolled myself into the Ruby RampUp program, in order to start fresh the following full-time Immersive web development program of this fall. All of you from Startup Institute have already conquered my trust as well as I already think extremely high of the institution as a whole.
About me, I can tell that I’ve been (since the beginning of the cohort) studying really hard and developing my coding skills very fast and efficiently, which has already resulted (under the very well done tutelage of Sam) in a partial portfolio of some elegant, creative and well-written Ruby programs.
I am (with all humility) already proud of my achievements, though know that there is still a way to go before the end of the cohort, scheduled to be finished soon on this September the 10th. As such, I will continue to study hard, pushing all the boundaries of myself, in order to finish the outstanding coding exercises with excellence, as well.
Katie, once again I would like to express my gratitude to have heard from you. Thanks for checking on my progress in the Ruby RampUp program and let’s keep in touch.
Wish you a great weekend.
I have been trying to find the time to write this long over due thank you, I wanted to give it the appropriate attention and effort. I want thank each and everyone one of you for making my time at Startup Institute an absolute blast and one of the most amazing learning experiences, not just professionally, but also personally. It is amazing the people you are able to bring together and how everyone becomes a family, I won't use like a family because it truly is a family by the end of the 8 weeks. The amount of energy the group creates is tremendous and just is so motivating and it is nothing like I have ever been around.
I went to the most recent Talent Expo at Emerson and I was just so proud to be there and be apart of that, I was so proud of you as a team for what you have been able to accomplish and continue to accomplish. The community that you have created is so special and I don't have to tell you that because you already know that. The way you are able to help everyone as a team and truly truly care about the individual is something I aspire to have in my life professionally and personally. You guys and girls care so much for the people at Startup Institute and it is amazing to see and it is something that everyone feeds off of and makes them better.
I have been at my job for just over 7 months and I absolutely love it and without a doubt it wouldn't have been able to find this job if it wasn't for Startup Institute. I have already received a raise in salary and been give more responsibilities than I thought I would have this early in my career. It is something that would not have been possible with out you and I want all of you to know that because you are all apart of that. I am truly grateful and will never be able to thank you enough for the community you have brought me into and that you have created. It is truly something special. I work with another SI alum and it also shows with him as he has already been promoted within the company and brings so much value and energy to work every day. It speaks the quality of people and individuals you are able to bring together and the opportunities you are able to give people.
I have been tremendously busy with work and I am glad I was finally able to reach out to everyone. I have also spent a lot of time putting together an alumni soccer game for my high school and I love the fact that I am able to bring together a community of people for a great cause and be able to give back my to my roots. SI has taught me so much about community and I can't wait to give back to my community and use that same energy and philosophy that SI taught me everyday.
Thank you so much and wish you all the best,
I just got my Cinch email set up and I could not think of anyone else but you guys to send my first email to. So here it is : )
Thank you for believing in me and being there every step of the way through my career transition. What you all have done for me is nothing short of life changing and I cannot thank you all enough for that. Thank you for making Startup Institute what it is - to many of us, including me, it has become our second home.
Love you all,
Hope you're having an awesome end to your summer!
I just wanted to reach out and say thank you so much for the opportunity to be at the Startup Institute. I'm going to a CTA Conference coming up in Vancouver and with Mike King as one of the speakers, it reminded me of the Startup Institute with him teaching. It seems like so long ago now, but I couldn't imagine being where I am today without the Startup Institute. Even though I'm a remote employee out of Vancouver still working for Sailthru, let me know if anyone ever needs any advice/ is interested in Sailthru. Happy to help out!
Dear Allan, Ben, Katie, Rich, Stephanie, Trish and all the staff at SIB,
I don't even know where to start. OK, that's not entirely true, since my subject line is "Thanks". But gosh golly gee willikers, that tiny little word just can't possibly contain all the ginormous gratitude, happiness, and excitement I'm feeling right now. I just finished my first day at Wespire, and what will undoubtedly be the first day of of the rest of my career. You have truly changed my Life with a capital "L", like in the way that I'll be telling my grandkids about one day. Let me be the first to say: nice job with that! Totally nailed it.
Although you can't tell from my face — because you can't see it through email and because I basically have one expression for all my emotions — I assure you, all my feels are belong to you. Yes, they belong to SIB, but more than that, they really belong to the amazing, passionate and thoughtful people that make it all possible. You guys are so good. In addition to being unbelievably talented at your jobs, you also care deeply and genuinely about the success and happiness of every student at SIB. That's what makes this program not just great, but truly special, and I feel privileged to have been a part of it.
Enrolling at Startup Institute was one of the best and most important decisions I've ever made. I can't wait to see how the program continues to grow and thrive, and I hope to contribute to its future success in any way I can. And I promise to restock your bananas whenever you're running low.
Thank you for supporting, pushing, and inspiring me for 8 amazing weeks. You guys are the best.
Lots of love,
TLDR: I got a job and I'm really excited about it. Thank you so much for all your advice and support.
The rumors were true. I got a job - signed the contract this afternoon. It was tough, sometimes depressing and to be honest, I was thinking to go back to France to do ... I don't know.
But eventually, I wrote a story on Medium, and it went a little bit viral - 10k views to date. I had a shitload of requests from all over the world. And eventually a couple of companies asked me to join their teams.
Matt Buckland liked the post and he introduced me to a company in the FP portfolio, Spoke London. They are building a men’s fashion brand in the UK, like Everlane and Frank & Oak in North America.
I like the product, the story and the founder. So eventually, after a couple of interviews, I accepted the offer to join the company. I'm going to start on Thursday.
Nonetheless to say I'm really excited!
Anyway, I would like to thank you so much for all your advices and supports during AND after SI. It was an awesome experience with brilliant people. I know it's cheesy, but this experience changed a lot of things in life.
Thank you so much.
I just wanted to write to thank you. I had a great first week at TRULY (Aaron, I don't think I told you I'm working at TRULY Experiences, one of the companies you invited to Pitch Day). I'm really enjoying it and none of it would have been possible without you.
The knowledge I gained from you is invaluable, and thanks to you, I've found a job where I can continue to build on everything I learned at Startup Institute, but moreover it's a job that I'm really enjoying with a great company and a great team.
Not only was Startup Institute an absolutely fantastic experience in itself, the trajectory it has enabled me to aim for is one that I am really, really pleased with.
So again, thank you!
